This is the Future: Adroit pet feeder

Overview
Feeding our pets is something we probably forget a LOT. Obviously our pets are very important but with a busy schedule it's easy to forget. So Adroit wants to make sure you never forget with the Adroit pet feeder that works with your smartphone. It is a contestant in the Electrolux contest for their "design lab." Idea looks great and could help save dogs and cats lives and yours too!

The Design

Since it's obviously a contestant in a design contest the design is very important. I gotta admit I'm used to square and aesthetically white designs but this one beats the atypical modern design with something more round. I really like the design because it's compact and not boring.

The Future

The future is bright with the innovation we've been seeing. From small fire extinguishers to this if we can focus on small things that can save lives from animals to humans then we can tackle some of the worlds bigger problems.

This is the Future: Fire extinguiser

Overview

Fire extinguishers have always been big, bulky red cylinders, but effective at putting out small fires. Now designer Philip Andersson has made a light and easy to use fire extinguisher that can be held in your hand and stashed in a bag for use anywhere. Say you have a bug out bag and you live in an urban setting where fires could be a problem in a survival situation. You could stash one in your bag so if you are in a general area and a fire blocks the only exit then you could use this to fight it. The amount of uses a small fire extinguisher brings are many. Read on!

The Design

Y'all know I love getting into the design of anything even if it was a bottle cap! Well this thing has an excellent non assuming design. It's perfect for an extinguisher. The directions to use it are pretty easy in layman terms. I could see someone using it, anyone really. The design is pretty minimalistic not much to talk about though.

The Future

Well the future looks pretty bright if we can keep fires from happening like they do. Look in the Midwest - West where we see elite firefighters getting overwhelmed by huge blazes. Sometimes these blazes which take brave men and women's lives could've been prevented. If this can help, I could see a future with less people dying.

This is the Future: Drinkable Sea Water

Overview

Survivalists also known as preppers have had a big boom recently after Hurricane Sandy and other events have ravaged different areas. Water events, and other disasters could easily contaminate freshwater with saltwater leaving people devastated and without the most important thing in the world: water.Without water people will die causing more disasters. Well some people made the Puri a device that could easily purify saltwater so it is good for drinking that would come in handy on any survival craft or for a home on the water.

The Design

Most people (reasonable people to be exact) wouldn't care about the design of something if it could save them from dying. I can applaud that. Still we have to remember this is being entered into a design contest so I like to look at the design of it. Wow I've never seen a more beautiful design for a purifier yet. Sleek, small, easy to use, and very beneficial. Not much more to say about it.

The Future

Wow. The future hopefully won't be a dystopian landscape out of a science fiction b movie, but in case it is you will be prepared with Puri. Puri shows a future where humans are rapidly advancing to tackle problems that were previously untenable. It shows that we as homo sapiens can tackle what the apocalypse throws at us before we hit the afterlife.

The Future of Homes

I have thought about this and you probably have too if you are in to movies like Iron Man or Star Trek. It makes you think about what homes and buildings will be like in the future. I've watched all the videos of Microsoft's insane, futuristic technology inside of homes and buildings. A big inspiration coming from Kinect, where virtual touchscreens and many other things are now possible. Illumiroom, Light Space, and all that cool Microsoft stuff are all pretty interesting and also thanks to Microsoft Research (MSR).
PFSK is doing there part in the future of homes. Here is a cool one, an interactive mirror. I don't think it is that helpful for the ladies but this mirror can display a lot more important stuff than your looks!

This is the future: Boompack

*This is the Future is a new series of posts showcasing products or concept art of products that could be the future of tech, culture, or art.

The Boompack by Massimo Battaglia
The Boompack

I frequent Yanko Design a site you may see a lot of the concept art coming from. The first TISF article is about the Boompack: Brand new Ghetto Blaster. The backpack is supposed to be a retro throwback to the boomboxes carried by people in the Hip Hop community. Instead of a bulky rectangle with a cassette providing the beats the Boompack has speakers integrated in the backpack with a beautiful design. A smartphone provides the beats with the added benefit of a PICO projector. The entire package manages a science fiction look with ease coming in various colors with the same shape. Obviously no street performer has ever had all this awesomeness made into one spiffy looking package. It can stand by itself displaying a cool background for the performer who can broadcast his beats on the street-corner or for a DJ who wanted to do a special event.

The Future

Well I have to admit I have never seen anything like this before. A backpack you can stuff with a laptop, tablet, books, and anything else you have plus having the ability to broadcast the music you love loudly is amazing. The only drawback would be potential weight. The backpack weights 7.5 kg or 16.5lbs which is a lot. Carrying that on your back plus a laptop, tablet, a few books, and anything else you have could make it 20 to 23 pounds which if you were carrying it for say 30 minutes would hurt. Still if there was a way to make it lighter to about 14lbs (still all weights would be in theory) this would be my next. If it existed.
